Course Overview

This course is a standard entry level qualification for employment as a support worker in the mental health sector. It is ideal for those interested in starting a career in mental health or those who have experience but do not hold a formal qualification.

This qualification covers workers who provide a range of community services focusing on rehabilitation and support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability. Contributing to the health and well-being of others can be a rewarding and challenging role in a diverse workforce. Enhance your career prospects in the sector by enrolling in this course.

This course will allow you to understand the diagnosis of clients, how to establish communication with clients and help them with the recovery process. You will also be given the skills to provide an effective support structure for people at risk of suicide or self harm. During this course, you will be provided with the skills and support techniques to effectively support clients and their families going through mental illness.

To enhance your learning experience and put the theory you have learned into practice, this course requires you to complete a minimum of 80 hours hands on placement in a mental health workplace or similar environment. These hours may not be able to be exempt if you already work in a similar environment.

Enrolment
Enrolment in the program is for a maximum of 24 months.

Students must aim to complete modules by the nominated completion date and as a minimum must demonstrate ongoing progression towards completion. Extension for assessment may be awarded at the trainer’s discretion.

Vocational Placement
This program requires a minimum of 80 hours vocational placement undertaken in an approved community service organisation that principally provides recovery oriented support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability.

Resources Required
All students require computer or tablet with access to the Internet and a program that can open and edit Word documents (this does not have to be Microsoft Office).

Delivery Options

Online
This course is delivered via our online learning system You do not need to come to class, however, you will need to keep in contact with your Educator and attend phone and/or web meetings to complete some of the practical components of your course.
Online learning allows you the flexibility of completing your course at your own pace, at times to suit work and other life commitments. You can work on your course at anytime, anywhere supported by your industry experienced Educator via telephone and email communication no matter where you are.

Distance
Distance learning allows you to have the same amount of convenience and flexibility as online or blended learning. The only difference is that instead of studying online, you will be studying via workbooks. Distance learning is perfect for students that prefer to have hard copy resources. Participants wishing to complete their qualification via distance instead of online will incur additional material and postage fees up to the value of $25.00 per unit.

RPL
If you have lots of experience and skills but no formal qualification you might want to consider Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). RPL is a process whereby you demonstrate that you currently have the required skills and knowledge for particular units/qualifications within the industry that you are experienced. RPL focuses on your life and work experiences and how they meet the criteria of the national qualifications to find out more about RPL contact us and one of our course advisors will contact you to discuss the RPL process.
